Smell

Smell's how the missing are found: a while back a sweetmeat 
rotted raped and stuffed in a ceiling plenum in coldwinter to 
downdraft into springtime neighbors' inhaling noses, unclogged, 
expecting clear air and got her death angel BO.

So says the law: we'll find her, him, the child, the lovely
jogger, the elderly hiker, when summer comes, the smell'll tell 
us where they rested, chatted with a stranger, offered water,
a nervous smile, a grimace, a wide-eyed stare, a futile struggle,

Restaurant sidewalks reek with slop dribbled from torn plastic
by cartage heavers, navies ordered by pig-sty purveryors to spill 
half their take on metro avenues, slosh residue of gobblers in satin
and denim making goo-goo eyes and lying highly educatedly: I love
your mind.

Fuel oil receptors gurgle and slobber No. 6 heavy, kitty-litter
benedictions cast on the carbon liquid broad-sprayed high on beige 
pre-cast, inside Dock's diners duck the gusher and hoo-haw rudely at 
the oiler straddling his bucking hose.

The filthy city's only clean and odorless in sub-0 blizzard, in summer 
it gags and stenches like Camembert spoiled success, like the 
overpopulated countryside befouled by ga-ga tourists escaping the urbs, 
puking animal hair and bone, overloading tame parklands's chlorined 
johnnies, diarrheaing trailsides, butchering unwary women on the 
Appalachian, and lostlove's achers begging warmth of demons in cold and 
lonely high-rent hovels of Manhattan.
